THE BRUTE (73) Heavy handed (sorry, couldn’t resist) British exploitation on the touchy subject (oops, did it again) of wife beating. Sarah Douglas plays the punching bag in question, a fashion model whose brutish spouse (the aptly named Peter Bull) likes to spring on her unexpectedly ala Inspector Clouseau’s butler, afterwards telling her not to worry, "it’ll be cleared up by the weekend." When her he-man hubby crosses the line and comes at her with a branding iron Sarah finally dumps him and seeks refuge at a women’s shelter. There she discovers that she and her pummeled peers all have one thing in common: They just won’t listen! Director Gerry O’Hara followed up with a short-lived children’s television series called Professor Popper’s Problem which, come to think of it, could’ve been an alternate title for this movie. BUY
