THE DARK RIDE (79) aka Killer’s Delight. Sleazy slasherthon from the sick, sick ‘70s that looks like it’s loosely based on the antics of Ted Bundy and/or Ed Kemper (take your pick). John Karlen (who played the mild mannered hubby on TV’s Cagney and Lacey!) stars as a creepy momma’s boy who trolls for hitchhiking hotties in his dingy panel van. Once he’s lured the tender young things into his rolling torture chamber he trusses them up, has his way with ‘em, does away with ‘em and then litters the Bay Area with their bodies like so many candy wrappers. DEADLINE (80) aka Anatomy of a Horror. Overlooked Canadian lensed shockfest follows a Stephen King-style horror author's descent into madness. This one really delivers with multiple hangings, gruesome stump spurting dismemberments, cannibal nuns, little kids setting their grandma on fire, bathtubs full o' blood, and a neo Nazi punk rock band whose music causes audience members to shit themselves to death! Life began for Steve Adams ("A piteous victim of ancestry.") with his mother's death during childbirth, and was compounded by a mysterious blood disease, for which his holy father must transfuse some of his own blood once a month to keep Steve in the pink. He grows up to be a morally conflicted son of a preacher man with a bloodlust that just won't quit, leaving a trail of corpses with strange holes in the necks and a lot less red in the veins. Best described as a surprisingly solid yet moody Carl Theodor Dreyer student film getting manhandled by Ray Dennis Steckler on his best day, this is the first of three films (and counting!) to be made the SIGNOSCOPE way, in which all the actors perform their dialogue with American sign language. HYSTERIA (97) Patrick McGoohan and Amanda Plummer give delightfully hammy performances in this quirky, little seen psycho shocker from director Ren Daalder (Massacre at Central High) about a mad doctor conducting "group mind" experiments on mental patients at a private sanitarium. Highlights include the therapy session that turns into a topless beatnik poetry slam complete with dervish dance off and the full six-minute group think orgy montage that helped insure this never got a stateside release. I DISMEMBER MAMA (74) aka Crazed; Poor Albert and Little Annie. Get your "Up Chuck Cups" ready, 'cause Albert is out for revenge against his mother for locking him up in a nut house years ago. But along the way poor Al gets in a few practice shots by starting a bit of a murder spree, shouting unfiltered hatred at his victims as he puts them down in performances so out in the stratosphere, you don't know whether to wince or smile. And if his "falling in love" with a 10 year old doesn't make you squirm, you might want to consider committing to a little rest & relaxation yourself. Unapologetic, and at times unpleasant exploitation with a cruel streak. Order

MESSIAH OF EVIL (74) aka Dead People; Return of the Living Dead; Revenge of the Screaming Dead; The Second Coming. Offbeat horror effort with Joy Bang and Royal Dano is short on gore, but long on creepy atmosphere. The couple who directed this also wrote the screenplays for American Graffiti and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Go figure. Order

NEVER PICK UP A STRANGER (79) aka Bloodrage. Sleazy, low-rent meanness from Joseph Zito. Ian Scott stars as a quiet creepo who more or less accidentally kills a hooker (woops!) when she threatens to call his mom. He flees to Times Square where he holes up in a shitbox hotel room, gets a job at a Yoo Hoo factory and offs a few more women before the dead hooker's cop boyfriend shows up to take him down. Scott narrates the majority of the picture ("the headaches have almost stopped now") for that "inside the mind of a killer" feel, the locations are suitably depressing and the murders, while few and far between, are surprisingly brutal and cold-hearted. All in all, this thing does exactly what it sets out to do: be a total fucking downer! Order

NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN (72) "She sucks the life from the bodies of men!" Joy Bang and Marlene Clark go toe to toe in this Philippines-lensed drive-in classic about sexual serpent possession in the South Pacific. Hard to find and best of all, it's... In Slitherama! Order

NIGHT OF THE DEMON (80) Yeah! The sickest, goriest Bigfoot movie of them all! A professor and his students go looking for the legendary Man Thing and boy, do they find him! Before they’re wiped out they also find Sasquatch worshiping Satanists and a mountain woman who had Bigfoot’s love child! This Hair Beast not only assaults women, he also rips a biker’s dick off while he’s taking a piss, forces two knife-wielding Girl Scouts to stab each other to death, tears a guy in half and flings his guts around and more, more, more! He meets an old vagrant who claims to have learned a Vietnamese incantation which will transform anyone's appearance into whatever they want, and he's willing to share this secret of morphosynthesis for a swig of whiskey. Now, looking like a girl he saw on a milk carton, Joe gets his peep on by enrolling himself in the local high school, with hijinks soon to follow. Oh, before I forget, he's also a serial killer with an abusive childhood who cannibalizes his victims and violates them with a knife, dances with blow-up dolls, and slits the throat of a transsexual hooker in this gory low budget diamond in the rough. Ultra, ultra, ULTRA rare horror trash directed by Joe D' Amato (under his "David Hills" alias), starring Donald O'Brien, Cinzia Monreale, and Richard Harsh, and with costumes designed by Laura Gemser! The title's appropriate since O'Brien was recovering from a stroke while making this and you may just have one watching it! No kidding, this is an incredibly BAD movie, which makes it all the more valuable to die hard D' Amato completists. Our copy's from a rare Venezuelan screener print (in English with no foreign subtitles!) and looks surprisingly good, considering. Order

This one's got a real ugly feel to it with branding, hanging, a woman tied to a bandsaw with barbed wire, a chainsaw vs. machete showdown and some gratuitous udder fondling ("Ever tasted it fresh?") that somehow manages to be more pornographic than the real thing could ever be. THE SECT (91) aka Demons 4; The Sect; La Setta. Supremely weird Michele Soavi/Dario Argento collaboration is sort of an Italian Rosemary's Baby with a Mansonoid subplot. THE SEXORCIST (74) aka Eerie Midnight Horror Show; The Tormented; Devil Obsession; The Touch of Satan; I Raccapriccianti Delitti di Monroe Park; L' Ossessa. Rare English dubbed and letterboxed Euro print of Mario Gariazzo's sexy Exorcist ripoff about a pent up art curator who becomes possessed by the statue of a crucified heretic. Naughty naughty! Order

SHIVERS (75) aka Orgy of the Blood Parasites, They Came From Within, Frissons, The Parasite Murders. David Cronenberg's first feature film is this brilliant low-budget shocker about an outbreak of sexually transmitted plague sweeping a luxury high-rise on its own river island off Montreal. A mad doctor experimenting with parasites for organ transplants develops a hideous phallic slug that infects its victims with equal parts aphrodisiac and bloodlust. Likewise, the movie is the perfect synthesis of old-school creature-feature and 70's sexual liberation, as everyone from nympho schoolgirls to swingin' yuppies, the elderly, a chic lesbian (Euro cult goddess Barbara Steele), blue-collar workers, housewives and even young children fall prey to the loathsome critters and become ferocious, sex-mad zombies. From its jarring opening, juxtaposing a young couple being shown their "dream home" in the Starliner Apartments with the mad doctor throttling his slutty jailbait mistress and then slashing his own throat, to the eerie, devastating final moments, Shivers takes you on a thrill-ride of repulsive perils of the flesh. Inspired by Night of the Living Dead, it went on to do the same for Alien, 28 Days and Cronenberg's Rabid, The Brood and Scanners, but with a lot more sex and nudity than any of those. 70's starlet Lynn Lowry from Score and The Crazies plays the naughty nurse heroine. The excellent-for-their- time monster and splatter effects were created by the great Joe Blasco. The scene where the parasites are squirming around beneath the skin of patient Alan Migicovsky still creeps us out today. Horrified film critics tried to mount protests against the grant Cronenberg had received from the National Film Board of Canada and Cronenberg was even evicted from his Toronto apartment because of the backlash! Donald Pleasance is a (gasp!) research psychologist for an asylum in this UK anthology film from Freddie Francis: first, a boy with an imaginary tiger that hates mommy and daddy as much as he loves red meat from the fridge; next, a belligerent portrait with the precious gift of telekinesis + a Victorian Era bicycle which is also a time machine = WOW; then, Joan Collins is vying with a provocative tree stump ("A perfectly natural piece of a tree.") for the affectionate attentions of her husband; finally, crazy old broad Kim Novak gets thrown off the A-list and into the world of Hawaiian hoodoo, ritual sacrifice, out-of-control she-teens, and (oops!) cannibalism.
