(72) A cornucopia for Dylanogists as this disc not only
includes the aforementioned docu on Bob Dylan’s 1966 tour of
England but lots of other rare tasty treats as well! The chief
feature details Dylan’s first exposure to the Brits. It seems
the Voice of Our Generation played largely to an
uncomprehending, very clean cut English audience who complained
that they couldn’t make out his lyrics! Well, DUH! This disc
also features the infamous limousine ride that Dylan took with
Beatle John Lennon. Bob has had one too many and Lennon exhorts
the balladeer to make hay while the sun shines. There’s a
snippet of a press conference and then we get extensive
performance footage of our main man playing with Johnny Cash
during his “Blonde on Blonde” period. It all ends with a VERY
rare television interview conducted in 1985, after his
flirtations with born-again Christianity and his participation
with the “We Are the World” single. Casual listener or longtime
fan, you’ll be utterly fascinated by this man and his music.

FAR AWAY IN THE
BUSHVELD (51) aka Daar doer in die Bosveld. Long
before he helmed the cult classic The Gods Must Be Crazy!,
South African auteur Jamie Uys helmed this slapstick comedy that
– not surprisingly, had large chunks recycled wholesale in that
later film. Uys directs, photographs and stars in this
home-brewed farce about a gentleman farmer who sets out to woo
the recently arrived schoolmarm (played by Uys real-life wife).
The guy’s a mess; he stutters, drives a clunker and has all the
grace and charm of one of the Three Stooges! Very rough-hewn,
this early effort has the feel of a home movie with primitive
editing, camerawork and special effects. This doesn’t get in the
way of some hearty laughs, but of course the REAL reason to
watch any film from this ominous tip of the continent is to spot
certain “cultural differences” that sneak past its makers’
watchful eyes. For instance, Uys is a nervous wreck – unless of
course he’s mercilessly brow-beating his native servants!
